space maintainers

Space maintainers are dental devices used to preserve the gap left by a prematurely lost primary (baby) tooth. They prevent adjacent teeth from shifting into the empty space, ensuring there is enough room for the proper eruption of the permanent tooth. Space maintainers are commonly used in pediatric dentistry to avoid misalignment and crowding issues that may require extensive orthodontic treatment later.

Fixed Space Maintainers
  • Band-and-Loop: A metal loop attached to a band on an adjacent tooth.
  • Crown-and-Loop: Similar to band-and-loop but attached to a crown.
  • Distal Shoe: Inserted into the gum to guide the eruption of molars.
Removable Space Maintainers
  • Custom-fitted devices similar to retainers, suitable for older children.
